Memorable visit to Tekal School

By Mili Chakraborthy.

Recently, I had the wonderful opportunity to visit Tekal , a charming government aided school where we conducted life skills training for 8th grade students and career counseling for 9th, and 10th-grade students. The day turned out to be as beautiful as the smiles on the children’s faces, making it an experience to remember.

As we arrived at Thekel, we were greeted by a school structure that was not only well-maintained but also filled with an atmosphere of excitement. The students were neatly dressed, and their eagerness resonated with our new morning team’s enthusiasm. It was clear that this day was going to be special.

I had the privilege of taking the session for the 8th graders alongside my colleague, Suchethna. Our first topic revolved around counseling awareness. We kicked things off with some icebreaker activities designed to make students feel comfortable and encourage interaction. The lively discussions and laughter echoed in the classroom, paving the way for a truly engaging experience. The students were eager to share their thoughts and ideas, making our session interactive and enjoyable.

After our informative session, we indulged in a special lunch prepared by the school. It was a fantastic way to bond with the students and staff, creating a sense of community that extended beyond the classroom.

Post-lunch, we took the excitement outdoors! Organizing several activities, we encouraged the students to participate enthusiastically, and they did not disappoint. The energy was palpable, and even the teachers joined in, making it a collaborative effort of fun and learning. The outdoor session was a tremendous hit, as laughter and cheers filled the air, showcasing a wonderful camaraderie among everyone involved.

For our second session, my co-facilitator Elizabeth joined me to discuss health hygiene and the importance of routine in our day-to-day lives. The enthusiasm of the students did not wane; in fact, it only grew stronger. They actively participated in discussions, shared personal anecdotes, and posed questions, showcasing their eagerness to learn and engage deeply with the topics.

This was my first time visiting Tekal, and despite facing a bit of a language barrier, I was able to bond with the students effortlessly. Through gestures, smiles, hugs, and shared experiences, we built a strong rapport that transcended words. It warmed my heart to see them connect, and it reinforced the idea that communication goes beyond language.

My trip to Thekel was more than just an educational outreach; it was an experience that enriched my understanding of youth, learning, and community engagement. The smiles, the laughter, and the earnest participation of students and staff alike made it all worthwhile. I left Tekal with a renewed sense of purpose and a heart full of gratitude. The day at Tekal was a reminder of the power of education, interaction, and the importance of life skills in shaping the future of these young minds. I look forward to future visits, eager to witness the growth of these students and to continue contributing to their journeys.
